The people in Michaels etchings
give scale to the landscape, a chance encounter, a moment of unbridled
passion, an amusement of some sort. Each image has its own story
to tell. Images evolve from brief outline sketches made in sketchbooks;
back in the workshop the image is refined/ altered to fit the narrative.
The process itself is what gives rise not only to the imagery, but
to how it is developed. |

Barbara tries to capture the mood
or atmosphere, colours, shapes and spatial relationships rather than
a representational image, the essence of place. She now makes creative
glass as well as painting, working in pastels to capture quick images.
The light coming through the glass is very exciting changing the
colours and moods with its own lights. |

Brian
Pike Online
Brian
creates his unique, jewellike paintings using special mixed-media
techniques of his own devising. Impossible to reproduce in print,
they combine rich, lustrous colours with subtle, shifting textures.
His subject matter is as individual as his painting style. Some of
his deceptively simple pieces depict mysteriously empty landscapes
touched by fading light. Others are visions of a quirky fairytale
world populated by a cast of bizarre characters. Defying categorization,
Brians work is strikingly contemporary, yet never loses sight
of the traditional values of careful, painstaking craftsmanship. |

Since moving to Scarborough, Andrew
became interested in documenting the fishing industry. In 2004 he
began using a baiting shed on the harbours West Pier as a studio.
At first the fishermen were wary thinking he was checking
their quotas when stood sketching them but they are now used
to him drawing them at work and he has enjoyed being out to sea with
them. The sea is a constant in Andrews work. Constantly changing,
constantly inspiring. And it is literally on his doorstep! |

Katie uses an eclectic mix of media acrylic
paint, inks, wax, found objects and other everyday materials. Her
inspiration is taken from the world around us our lives
are spent amongst a bewildering clutter of sights, sounds, events
and encounters with people, which are reflected through her collage
paintings. Collage offers a unique excitement though its tactile
versatility and ability to subvert meanings. |

Frank Gordon is a painter. He works mainly in oil
on canvas but occasionally with acrylic on canvas or paper, on a
range of scales. The majority of his work relates to his experience
of the countryside in his local Yorkshire Dales but with frequent
forays further afield, both in Britain and abroad. As a lifelong
walker, he has covered most of the long distance paths in Britain,
as well as major routes in the Alps and this experience informs the
approach he takes to his subject. |

A painter, David Hall works in watercolour, acrylic,
oil and pencil, mainly subjects drawn from nature. He takes his
inspiration from the beauty, diversity and reality of the natural
world and from a strong sense of place within the environment.
Feeling it important to maintain a connection between man, land
and nature, he hopes to represent subjects and their habitats as
though the observer is part of the whole and not dislocated from
it. |

Eileens paintings are of time

My work is inspired by
colour, especially the seasonal changing colours we experience
each year. Colour is the motivational
aspect for me and is a concentrated subject in itself. Exploring
this is an ongoing process in the development of my work. I
am most interested in creating light and atmospheric effects using
colour. Space and balance are also important elements of
my work in achieving successful compositions. My work is heavily
textured to create richness and depth, and is built up using oil
paint, beeswax, twigs and other natural found materials. |

Lesleys paintings are optimistic
and celebratory. Not seeking to imitate life, they anticipate
and share the unexpected. Abstract and semi-abstract, the work
is informed by her interest in theatre, music, dance and literature.
She has an ongoing fascination with ancient signs, texts and
alphabets, and the alliance between painting and language which
enriches and sustain her work. The drawings are sourced from
landscape, organic and manmade forms and support the structure
of the painting, underpinning its philosophical concerns, encouraging
viewer participation and intrigue. |

Hamish Marrs approach to making art has evolved
over the last 20 years. Over this time, research has led him to use
3d modelling packages as an extension to his drawing in the making
of virtual 3d objects. This digital sculpture has been
made possible by the leaps that both processing power and software
innovation has taken in the last decade. It has allowed him to visualise
in the computers virtual space and in amazing ways, to scale,
duplicate and distort and then apply materials that have no real
world equivalents to produce photo-realistic images as an outcome.
The images are inspired by an island upbringing, they are beautiful,
isolated, enigmatic and at times frightening. |

... he paints
the odd picture
My paintings depict my working class roots and life. My father worked
in the steel works and my mother in a bun factory. Both lived a hard
life and passed away early as a result. I like to give my subjects
an air of loneliness and reflection. The
medium that I choose to paint in is emulsion which is applied to
MDF board. |

Nancy Murgatroyd creates work in oils,
acrylics, pastels, textiles, embroidery and collage. She is
inspired by the visual richness of the world around her and
relishes the opportunity to look at a subject in a fresh and
concentrated way. Her aim is to engage the viewer in the experience
by using rich and vibrant colours, textures, rhythms and energy.
The subjects dictate her approach. Flower painting may enlarge
one bloom to a grand scale. Subjects can be refined to abstraction
to capture their essence. Her work is a celebration of vitality,
contrast, harmony and lifes mysterious quirkiness. |
| |
Ina Pickard places much emphasis on drawing skills
and her works traverses abstract and figurative painting. She works
in oil, watercolour and mixed media, relishing the different characteristics
these materials present. Some of the work is representational such
as the opera themes in watercolour and pastel. Other work depicts
highly personal semi-abstract interpretations of the figure, still-life
and the landscape. She has worked as artist-in-residence at Opera
North. |

Sue creates powerful paintings, inspired
by the beautiful landscape in which she lives. She believes that
her intimate knowledge of the Moors and Dales strongly influences
her work. The rhythm of the land and the pattern of fields fascinate
her with their contrasting colours and textures. Sues paintings
are a direct response the different moods imposed on the same landscape
by season and weather. |

Richard Snowden has drawn, painted and sculpted using
all sorts of tools and media for the last 40 years. However, this
last year he has mainly painted and regularly shows his electric,
spontaneous new work around the region. He has many avid collectors,
worldwide and locally. |
| |
Sue Strange is a painter inspired by landscape, both
natural and built. Textures in the landscape provide a framework,
which is worked over with closely observed colour relationships.
Patterns in the landscape created by walling and the changes of vegetation
are often apparent in her work. The weather is influential in dictating
mood and atmosphere. Sue also enjoys painting horses in a colourful
contemporary style. She mostly works in oils, but also uses watercolour,
inks and acrylic in mixed media pieces. She is currently working
on a series of paintings inspired by seasonal changes of moorlands
near her home. |

To Clothylde, the range of colours and forms found
in nature is inspiring. Although her range of subject is varied and
includes flowers and still lives, she has recently concentrated on
landscapes with a particular empahasis on the semisymbiotic relationship
of buildings, land and sea on the North Yorkshire coast. These paintings
are inspired conceptually by Paul Klees notion of taking a
line for a walk, and in practice by stained glass design, which imposes
boundaries on changes of colour. Thus treading a fine line between
spontaneity and formality, these landscapes are painted in a studio
from loose sketches. |
