... he paints the odd picture
My paintings depict my working class roots and life. My father worked in the
steel works and my mother in a bun factory. Both lived a hard life and passed
away early as a result. I like to give my subjects an air of loneliness and
reflection. The medium that I choose to paint in is emulsion which is applied to MDF
board. |

Liz produces hand made stoneware tableware
and one-off vessels intended for everyday use. The main focus of
the work is placed on exploring function, form and surface in an
endless quest for the perfect balance of traditional craft and
design. The pots are gas fired with Shino and Temmoku glaze. As
the pieces evolve there is an attempt to search for the new, and
yet pay homage to tradition within each form. Each piece will work
as an independent piece or part of a set. The work is tableware,
although she does not seek to unify the work in a regimented service.

Sophie makes
a range of colourful, functional, high-fired stoneware pots. All
the pots are made to be used; they include mugs, jugs, bowls, plates,
vases and plant pot holders. Sophie keeps the shapes simple to
allow for the decoration, each pot is decorated using brushes,
sponges and slip trailors to apply layers of different coloured
glazes. The pots are all fired in a reducing atmosphere, this creates
the wonderful rich diffusion of colours that so characterizes Sophies
work. Flowers inspire many of her designs, but fish, spirals and
stripes are also an influence too.

Andrew has lived and worked in Askrigg for the past 30 years. He
works alone, producing pots that he hopes people will enjoy both
practically and aesthetically. He works in both stoneware and porcelain
clays. |
| |
Isobel Dallas designs and makes contemporary
porcelain tableware. Her pieces are thrown in a free way in
order to achieve a sketched look and are hugely influenced by the colour,
mood and movement of water, particularly the ocean. The celadon glazes
she loves are enhanced by texture on the surface of the pieces. Designs
are made with particular foods or recipes in mind to reflect modern
eating habits presentation of goods, simply cooked food. |

Ray Davies background in sculptural ceramics,
based on mould-made multiple forms, changed direction when he set
up his studio in Reeth. The current work from the studio falls into
two categories: firstly that of daily, functional, domestic wares
and secondly individual pieces that are thrown and finely worked
in white stoneware and fired to 1280°C. The work is inspired
and influenced by the pots and vessels of antiquity, which have a
religious use and symbolism and also by a fascination with the relationship
of light and texture on simple, pure forms. |

Dawn is primarily
a printmaker and textile artist, taking nature as her main inspiration; It
is my safe place where I go to feel protected. The endless shapes,
colours, textures and forms to be found in nature can be taken
in so many directions. The life drawing monoprints are studies
for a project inspired by the process of pregnancy. The metamorphosis
of the body echoes her fascination with the relationship between
the physical and psychological. Mental states and experiences are
rarely reflected within our own physical shape. Pregnancy is an
example of how an event can mould our material being. The line
functions to tentatively explore the fragility of human life and
inner vulnerability.

Caroline Dunn is a textile
artist who makes scarves, bags and cushions as well as wall hangings
and quilts. Her large hangings and quilts are mostly made to commission,
using free machine stitching on natural fabrics, creating pieces,
which are sensuous and tactile. Her inspiration is drawn from a
variety of sources, and often makes a historical reference to medieval
art. She uses both figurative and abstract images and the intense,
vibrant colour palette of the medieval period, as well as the subtle
monochrome tones. She also teaches the skills, which underpin her
work: feltmaking, handdyeing, collage ad machine embroidery.

Andreas felt pictures
have depth, subtlety, texture and a real feeling of movement. This
sense of movement is particularly evident in her windswept landscapes
and images of animals. These qualities are born from her technique
of working with fine layers of wool as if it were paint. It is
this technique and a strong illustrative dimension, which makes
her work distinctly different from traditional felt art work and
has won her much acclaim. Andrea is inspired by the dales landscape,
its inhabitants and particularly in the dramatic contrasts that
the dales weather brings. She was born in Wensleydale and worked
there as a professional artist for several years, before her interest
in textiles uncovered a real love for felt making. Andrea is also
opening an area of her house to stage Felt At Home exhibition. |
